The 2025 BMW X3 M50 xDrive might seem like a natural evolution of the 2024 X3 M40i, but its secret weapon lies under the hood: a 48-volt mild hybrid system. This upgrade brings more torque, smooth power delivery, and a refined drive, making the new M50 a clear step ahead. Here’s how a ‘mild’ hybrid system gives this next-gen 2025 X3 some seriously unmild results.
Right now, there’s no high-performance 2025 X3 M being offered, as there was in prior years. Though BMW could introduce it in the future. The two 2025 X3 models went on sale Fall 2024:
- 2025 BMW X3 30 xDrive: $49,500 (plus $1,175 destination and handling)
- 2025 BMW X3 M50 xDrive: $64,100 (plus $1,175 destination and handling)
Power And Torque: The New X3 M50’s Hybrid Advantage
The outgoing M40i was no slouch, making over 380 horsepower and a respectable 369 pound feet of torque. It successfully bridged the gap between the standard mid-size X3 SUV and the track-focused X3 M – perfect for those seeking the M-level thrills without dialing up to a full blown BMW M machine (and the associated costs).

For 2025, the X3 M50 xDrive serves the same purpose but introduces the mild hybrid system, where the small electric motor assists the engine during acceleration and coasting, having a significant impact on efficiency and performance. Unlike full hybrids or plug-in hybrids (PHEV), the electric motor here cannot power the X3 by itself. But the result? A boost to 393 horsepower and a torque surge to an impressive 428 pound feet – numbers that make a noticeable difference on the road.
Is the 2025 X3 M50 xDrive the new X3 M replacement?
Well, not really. Actually, not at all. The 2024 X3 M was a completely different beast, putting down 473 horsepower and sprinting 0-60 MPH in about 4-seconds (the X3 M Competition accomplished that in a mere 3.7 seconds). However, in terms of torque, they’re not that far apart, with the X3 M making 457 pound feet compared to the M50’s 428 pound feet. They both share BMW’s adaptive M suspension, M compound brakes, and active M differential. But the X3 M is blessed with some extra M-specific tuning for steering, suspension, and brakes you won’t find in the lower grades.
Frankly, we can see why BMW put a small electric motor in this thing, aside from just fuel efficiency. The new hybrid setup doesn’t just boost power but enhances the overall driving feel.
As it stands today, you’ll either need to find a used X3 M on the market, or make do with the improved 2025 X3 M50 xDrive with all its worthy upgrades. Our guess? BMW will unleash a hybrid-powered X3 M for 2026. But don’t hold us to that.

On The Road: Smoother And Faster Than The X3 M40i
We took it for a quick drive in and around BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. Not the track, mind you, but out on the freeway and some local roads. In the real world, the M50’s extra torque translates to quicker off-the-line acceleration, sharper throttle response, and more confident passing power on highways. Overall, it feels more eager and responsive than its predecessor. The hybrid system offers even smoother power delivery and eliminates any lag, making our drive on that wet, gloomy day feel more refined and connected.
Frankly, we can see why BMW put a small electric motor in this thing, aside from just fuel efficiency. The new hybrid setup doesn’t just boost power but enhances the overall driving feel. During lower speeds and when pulling away from a stop, we found acceleration not only quick but effortlessly smooth – the transition between the engine and electric motor is almost seamless.
The start-stop system operates with barely a hint of interruption, making city traffic less jarring. We were in fairly heavy rush hour traffic, and put this to good use. When the roads opened up, the adaptive suspension and M Sport differential on our all-wheel drive M50 handled corners and undulating roads with impressive poise, feeling sportier and more planted than the outgoing M40i. More on this handling below.

Efficiency Gains: Smarter Power
At time of writing, BMW tells us official fuel economy ratings are still pending, but we can confirm all this extra power comes with noticeable efficiency gains – that’s a win-win. For starters, the hybrid system assists the engine during acceleration, coasting, and deceleration to reduce fuel consumption, particularly at lower speeds and in bumper-to-bumper traffic. This means you get a boost in performance without a penalty at the pump, making the M50 xDrive a smarter choice for both performance and efficiency.

Handling And Suspension: The M Edge
The star here, and what really sets the M50 apart from the base X3 out in the wild, is the Adaptive M Suspension and M Sport Differential. It’s a one-two punch coupled with xDrive, the M Sport brake system, and 20-inch alloy M wheels. The M suspension continuously adjusts damping for optimal performance, so great for both highway drives and the narrow, twisty roads. Push the X3 M50 hard and it stiffens up…coast on the highway and it softens for a more comfortable ride.
The outgoing M40i doesn’t compromise here either, but BMW’s newest variant does gain sharper and more responsive steering.
The M Sport Differential pitches in for traction and agility, and was optional on the outgoing 2024 X3 M40i. It distributes power between the rear wheels so this larger compact crossover stays composed and predictable when exiting corners. Again, it was pouring rain during our drive in South Carolina. Yet, the extra grip and refined dynamics instilled confidence on the wet roads. There was never a sense of unease or loss of traction. Everything felt refined, and what you’d expect from a well-crafted German machine like this. The outgoing M40i doesn’t compromise here either, but BMW’s newest variant does gain sharper and more responsive steering.
Verdict
Getting your hands on a used, 382 horsepower X3 M40i isn’t a bad move. It finds all the BMW M add-ons and still sets the compact performance SUV bar high. But along with next-gen X3 M50 xDrive’s updated looks and styling (the new quad exhaust tips, more aggressive blacked-out kidney grill, the larger 20-inch wheels), BMW managed to add more torque, smoother performance, improved efficiency, and sharper handling. All thanks to a small little motor that packs a punch.
