Most RAV4 Hybrid shoppers probably won’t even give the Forester a thought, and that’s fair. Toyota’s small SUV has been the country’s best-selling compact hybrid since it landed in 2016. It’s affordable, reliable, better-looking than ever, and really took off after its 2019 fifth-gen redesign, which brought an even more refined and efficient hybrid system. Then came the plug-in RAV4 Prime in 2021, adding another layer to its appeal.

But Subaru’s top-selling vehicle year after year, the Forester, has a dedicated following. And while it’s not always top of mind for most buyers, the Forester’s sleeker 2025 redesign introduced last year, coupled with a first-ever hybrid variant arriving this spring, may put Toyota’s reigning champ on notice. At least it should and here’s why.

Sure, all 2025 RAV4 Hybrid’s come with standard electronic all-wheel drive. But decade after decade, nobody does all-wheel drive better than Subaru–it’s not an add-on, it’s just part of the deal and always standard. Taking it further, with the 2025 Forester Hybrid, Subaru went the extra distance to ensure there’s no compromise in performance and off-road chops.

It’s important to note the Subaru Forester Hybrid is built on a hybrid system developed in collaboration with Toyota. This includes the 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery, all tweaked to work with the Subaru SUV.

In fact, the Subaru wizards made the hybridized-Forester even more powerful than its ICE counterpart, rated at 194 horsepower combined compared to 180 horsepower. Courtesy of a next-generation 2.5 liter Boxer engine with electronic motors and a high-capacity lithium ion battery. By including a mechanical connection to the rear axle, the Forester Hybrid maintains its proven symmetrical full-time all-wheel drive. Subaru’s signature features stay intact while still employing dual-motor hybrid system hardware.

It’s important to note the Subaru Forester Hybrid is built on a hybrid system developed in collaboration with Toyota. This includes the 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery, all tweaked to work with the Subaru SUV. So, there’s that. And this electric collaboration between the Japanese brands is nothing new: the outgoing Subaru Crosstrek PHEV subcompact introduced in 2019 used Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system found in the Toyota Prius Prime.

The point here isn’t necessarily that the Subaru is the better buy. But moreso, for potential RAV4 Hybrid shoppers to give Subaru’s first-every hybridized Forester a look. Especially if heading off-road or off the beaten path is part of your lifestyle.

In terms of styling, the RAV4’s looks have come a long way, flossing a burlier look with a strong presence. And you can buy a slighty older model for a bit cheaper. Meanwhile, the redesigned 2025 Forester takes on a more streamlined look that’ll appeal to the masses. So, they both look great curbside.

But inside, the Forester Hybrid steps up with better and bigger tech, high quality interiors designed for durability, and that larger rear opening despite the same cargo space with rear seats down. The RAV4 Hybrid does have more combined power, but in our view, the Subaru’s proven all-wheel drive supersedes this, all day every day.
