SNL’s “The Californians” Is Back In New VW ID. Buzz Commercial

Thanks to its effervescent, retro-inspired styling, and versatile interior, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz is arguably the hottest vehicle this German automaker has introduced in years. Capitalizing on the buzz – yes, pun intended – surrounding this all-electric people-hauler, VW just announced a partnership with NBCUniversal to help celebrate both the 50th season of the media firm’s Saturday Night Live (SNL) sketch comedy series, and the automaker’s 75th anniversary in the U.S.

SNL’s legendary sketch, “The Californians” is back in a new co-branded commercial. As expected, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, and Fred Armisen all reprised their roles for this minute-long spot. The actors portray stereotypical residents of Southern California, complete with vapid dialogue, frequent references to local highways, and an unmistakable regional affectation, elements that made the original sketches such so riotously fun.

“‘The Californians’ is as synonymous with SNL as the ID. Buzz is with California, making it the perfect vehicle to bring back a sketch that resonates with so many,” said Rachael Zaluzec, senior vice president of customer experience and brand marketing at Volkswagen of America in a media release shared by the automaker. “Especially in the wake of this recent tragedy that has affected communities across California, we believe in the healing power of comedy,” she added.

Helping the region recover after the devastating wildfires that scorched much of the Los Angeles area, Volkswagen has pledged a monetary donation to the non-profit California Fire Foundation. “We are grateful to Volkswagen for their generosity and their commitment to support firefighters and the communities we serve,” said Brian K. Rice, chair of the California Fire Foundation.

with unmistakable styling. A tip of the hat to VW’s iconic microbus, this boxy and versatile people-hauler looks like nothing else on the road today, and that’s not just because of its flat flanks, and available two-tone paint.

The rear-wheel-drive
