While many people start shopping around the colder holidays, the shopping gets rolled over into the New Year, especially with the assortment of models being updated and released. Car shopping is a very personal experience and really comes down to what you want from the vehicle. If you’re shopping for the family, there are two popular platforms that suit the role: hybrids (HEVs) and SUVs.
Over the years, car brands like Toyota, Hyundai, Honda, and many more have shown how reliable their hybrids can be. Of course, you want reliability from an SUV that will transport your family, but there is another essential aspect that most buyers wish for: space. So, when you take a spacious hybrid SUV that’s optimal for families, you’re left with the question, “Is there any out there that fits the bill?”. The simple answer is yes, and there’s one in particular that’s worth taking a look at.
In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from Toyota.

Toyota Grand Highlander Price, Configurations, And What You Get For The Money
The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander price could be worth it for the size and features you get for the money. Here’s what each trim has to offer.
The 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid Is A Top Contendor
If you’ve stayed up-to-date in the automotive industry, specifically the hybrid side of things, you’ve probably seen all the talk about Toyota. In general, Toyota is a great brand when it comes to reliability, ownership costs, resale value, and many other areas. These feats continue onto their hybrids, which, if you don’t know, is the majority of the lineup. So, when you dive into Toyota’s hybrid lineup, looking for a model that’s spacious and family-friendly, one model stands out: the 2025 Grand Highlander Hybrid.
Up To 97.5 Cubic Feet Of Cargo Space
If you’re one where numbers go in one ear and out the other, the good news is you’ll explore all the interior dimensions in order to get the numbers part out of the way. While the Grand Highlander Hybrid offers a lot of space to explore, the cargo is the first place to take a look at. A cargo volume on any vehicle that’s destined to house a family can make or break it. Whether you’re shopping for a family of six, on the way to drop off your child’s soccer team and their equipment, or even both, Toyota makes it apparent that there was plenty of thought behind the Grand Highlander Hybrid’s cargo space.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rated the passenger volume on the Grand Highlander Hybrid with 149 cubic feet of space with the panoramic moonroof and 153.3 without the panoramic moonroof. This hybrid SUV comes standard with three rows, and it wouldn’t be optimal if the seats didn’t fold down for more storage space. The good news is the Grand Highlander Hybrid does have foldable seats, and with all of them up, it offers 20.6 cubic feet. In the rear, behind the second row of seats, the Grand Highlander Hybrid provides 57.9 cubic feet of space. Lastly, this hybrid SUV offers 97.5 cubic feet of space behind the front seats.

The Grand Highlander Hybrid Seats Up To Eight People
The Toyota Grand Highlander sits at the top of the list compared to hybrid SUVs in terms of cargo capacity. Surprisingly, an SUV can provide plenty of cargo space, but when it comes to the personal space for each passenger, some models can feel compacted. Toyota has you covered with this issue because the 2025 Grand Highlander Hybrid offers maximum cargo and personal space. Plus, every driver and front passenger knows that “happy kids equal a happy life.”
Starting out with headroom, the Grand Highlander offers 41.5 inches in the front, 38.5 to 40.2 inches in the second row (depending on the moonroof), and 37.2 inches in the third row. Off the rip, the Grand Highlander does not look to lack in headroom in all three rows of seating. This changes a bit with legroom, but this issue is typical for three-row SUVs. The front row receives 41.7 inches in legroom, 39.5 inches in the middle seats, and a significant dip with 33.5 inches in the third row. Of course, there are SUVs on the market that add considerable room in the third row, but even the Grand Highlander Hybrid competes with other spacious SUVs.

Toyota Offers Five Trims On The Grand Highlander Hybrid
When you dive into the 2025 Grand Highlander Hybrid and its trims, it gets a bit dicey. Not in a bad way, because in reality, car brands over the last 25 years don’t really explain what each trim offers in an easy-to-understand way. But who’s to blame them when there are a hundred-plus features in one model and 20 additional ones in the other? The 2025 Grand Highlander is offered in five grades: XLE, Limited, Nightshade, MAX Limited, and MAX Platinum. You probably tripped over the “MAX” when looking at the trims, and the main difference here will be seen in the upcoming powertrain breakdown.
The starting price of the base trim, the XLE, is $45,380. This grade will be the foundation the higher trims will build on, showcasing Toyota’s free standard features. The Limited and Limited MAX bring in extra convenient features and some comfort, with prices ranging from $51,710 to $54,690. Toyota has been adding Nightshade trims all throughout its lineup, and the significant changes include a different look on the exterior. This theme is darker with black accents such as spoilers, roof rails, bumpers, wheels, and many more. The Nightshade comes with a starting price of $52,710. The cream of the crop and most elevated trim is the Max Platinum, which comes equipped with all the bells and whistles. This trim comes with the most expensive price, sitting at $58,775.

Available With Two Hybrid Powertrains
Toyota offers three different engine setups on the Grand Highlander. The first is your traditional non-electric powertrain (ICE), the second is a hybrid engine, and the second is a more powerful hybrid powertrain. This isn’t new for Toyota, with the 2024 Crown being another example of one of its models being offered in two hybrid configurations. Starting with the base hybrid powertrain, the Grand Highlander can house the 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine, producing 245 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. This system utilizes an electronically continuously variable transmission (EVCT), which is just a fancy name for Toyota’s modern automatic transmission. The base hybrid system can either come equipped with a front-wheel drive system or all-wheel drive.
The more expensive trims come equipped with Toyota’s 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid MAX engine. This system bumps up the performance, offering 362 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. It also swaps out the EVCT with a direct-shift six-speed ECT automatic transmission. This configuration is only offered in all-wheel drive.

The Technology Is The Show Stopper Of Standard Features
Plenty of automotive manufacturers do a fantastic job regarding standard features, but when you compare some brands to Toyota’s features, you’ll see that this Japanese brand puts a lot of effort and thought into its models. Every trim carries some unique features, so it’s best to explore what features are on every time. Technology is one of the main outliers, with examples including the standard 12.3-inch multimedia screen, various USB ports, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and many others.
When it comes to driver assistance systems, the Grand Highlander Hybrid comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. This system includes an assortment of driver aids that are optimal for families, which keep you safe and protected while driving. While there are plenty of other standard features, the Grand Highlander Hybrid technology is one of the more impressive tidbits on the hybrid SUV.
