The Crosstrek Hybrid Is Back But Is It Finally Done Right?

Following a lengthy hiatus, Subaru’s bringing the Crosstrek Hybrid back and it’s about time. Making its global, in-person debut at the Chicago Auto Show alongside a pair of new Forester models including a hybrid version, this next-generation variant goes well beyond a reboot. Simply put, it dials up even further what is arguably the best and certainly the most capable all-wheel drive subcompact on the market today.

We got up close with the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid (dubbed Crosstrek e-Boxer Hybrid in Canada) for its first live appearance in this exclusive Sand Dune Pearl color following the official announcement in January 2025. Here’s what you need to know.

More Power And Hybrid-Tuned All-Wheel Drive

Powering the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid in the U.S. (dubbed Crosstrek e-Boxer Hybrid in Canada) is the Japanese automaker’s next-generation series parallel e-Boxer hybrid system. The setup combines Subaru’s newly developed 2.5 liter Boxer engine paired with electric motors and a high-capacity lithium-ion battery.

We wouldn’t say Subaru’s past attempt at a hybrid vehicle was a failed one. But its first go with the 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid struggled to gain traction while also adding nearly 140 kg to its waistline. That’s all changed for 2026.

Going Toe-To-Toe With The New Forester Hybrid

The nearly 200 horsepower combined output surpasses the 148 horsepower we got with the Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid produced between 2019 to 2021. That model featured the 2.0-liter Boxer mill with a 13.4-horsepower electric motor integrated into the CVT. The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) remains for 2026 but expect it to be exceptionally better, introduced with the latest third-generation Crosstrek update. And for what it’s worth, this small but mighty crossover produces the same 194 horsepower as its midsize Forester Hybrid sibling.

Expect Much Better Fuel Economy Than Before

We won’t have firm electric range and fuel economy figures until late 2025 when the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid goes on sale. But it’s safe to say the 2026 model will exceed the 90 MPGe and 480 miles total range from five years ago. That hybrid system was developed in collaboration with Toyota, similar to the Prius Prime. Now, Subaru’s paving its own path, gaining valuable insights into hybrid technology and setting the stage for the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid model.

Don’t Expect Any Compromises In Power And Performance

Sure, this is a hybrid. But that doesn’t mean it will compromise any performance or key features Subaru buyers expect, according to the company. In fact, the hybrid powertrain looks to enhance all aspects of the midsize SUV. By including a mechanical connection to the rear axle, the Crosstrek Hybrid maintains is proven symmetrical full-time all-wheel drive. Subaru’s signature features stay intact while still employing dual-motor hybrid system hardware.

New Crosstrek Hybrid Colors, Same Crosstrek Capabilities

Beyond stellar fuel economy, the Crosstrek Hybrid will do what it does best: hit the unpaved trails with confidence. Full-time all-wheel drive comes standard (across all Subaru SUVs), X-Mode with Hill Descent Control adds off-road capabilities, and the small Crosstrek’s 220 mm ground clearance will put many fullsize SUVs to shame.

Now, with hybrid SUVs surging in popularity, Subaru’s timing couldn’t be better. The company learned from its past, is taking advantage of today’s advanced hybrid technology, and ultimately, making its top two selling vehicles even better.

EyeSight Driver Assist Won’t Cost Extra

Subaru did the right thing by including its award-winning EyeSight safety system as standard. Once an upgrade (and bulky-looking, at that) the newer, slimmer, and more advanced version is standard on all 2026 Crosstrek Hybrids.

Also standard is the 11.6-inch Subaru Starlink media plus high-resolution touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other tech includes Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, SiriusXM Radio and SiriusXM Travel Link with a trail subscription, and over-the-air software updates.

Why The Return Of The Crosstrek Hybrid Matters

We wouldn’t say Subaru’s past attempt at a hybrid vehicle was a failed one. But its first go with the 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid struggled to gain traction while also adding nearly 140 kg to its waistline. Followed by the company’s first-ever PHEV, the 2019 Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid, only to disappear shortly after.

Now, with hybrid SUVs surging in popularity, Subaru’s timing couldn’t be better. The company learned from its past, is taking advantage of today’s advanced hybrid technology, and ultimately, making its top two selling vehicles even better.

Our bold prediction? The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid will be Subaru’s best-selling vehicle when it arrives in late 2025, surpassing the Forester and the new 2025 Forester Hybrid hitting dealerships in spring 2025. Regardless, Subaru just made its popular little off-roader even better, and that’s what buyers expect.
