Volvo just savagely killed off one of its most important electric vehicles. For 2025, the XC40 Recharge is no more; the nameplate has been tossed away like an old sandwich wrapper after lunch. This sounds like terrible news, especially for an automaker that is focused on electrifying its model range, but fear not if you had hoped to own one of these premium and popular electric SUVs. The XC40 Recharge may have been discontinued, but the vehicle itself is far from dead.

Meet The “New” Volvo EX40
To better align with its current nomenclature, Volvo has renamed this SUV for the 2025 model year. The XC40 Recharge is now officially the EX40, which fits in perfectly with the Swedish automaker’s other all-electric SUVs, including the EX30 and EX90. The closely related gasoline-electric hybrid XC40 will remain in the Volvo portfolio.
Similarly, the C40 Recharge – essentially a more coupe-like version of the XC40 Recharge thanks to its sloping roofline – is getting rechristened, too. Along with the automaker’s plug-in hybrid models, going forward, this all-electric crossover will lose the “Recharge” branding and will simply be called the EC40. This vehicle is expected to return to the U.S. market for the 2026 model year, giving drivers a slightly more stylish alternative to the boxier EX40.

There’s One Big Mechanical Change, Too
Aside from its new name, the EX40 is also receiving a significant technical upgrade for 2025. Going forward, the Twin Motor model will feature an 82-kilowatt-hour battery, up from 78 kWh. It appears Volvo is just using the same pack that’s found in the Single Motor Extended Range version of the XC40 Recharge, which, for whatever reason, has a capacity of 82 kWh. Regardless, this new, larger pack also fast charges at a quicker rate; expect it to top out at 205 kilowatts instead of just 200.
This SUV has a new name and a larger battery pack, but other than those upgrades, it doesn’t sound like Volvo will be making any other significant changes for 2025. And honestly, the XC40 Recharge doesn’t really need any additional enhancements as it’s already a refined, comfortable, and upscale vehicle.
Assuming nothing else changes, the single-motor version of the EX40 should feature rear-wheel drive and brandish 248 horsepower. That’s enough to move the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in around 6.9 seconds. Naturally, the twin-motor model will be much more powerful. With standard all-wheel drive, this SUV has an impressive 402 hp, enough for a mile-a-minute romp in just 4.6 seconds.
