Lucid is one of the few electric car startups that has managed to not just survive but find some success in the business. The brand was first established in 2007 by Bernard Tse, former Tesla Motors Vice President under the name Atieva. Its core practise was to develop advanced electric battery technology and electric powertrains for electric cars. Atieva was rebranded as Lucid in 2016.
Developed by an experienced team of industry leaders and engineers, Lucid introduced its first product, the Lucid Air, a luxury electric sedan. First showcased in 2016, the Lucid Air didn’t enter production until 2021. The long wait was worth it as it is one of the few electric cars that has come close to dethroning the flagship Tesla Model S. It isn’t surprising, though, given that the person currently spearheading Lucid, Peter Rawlinson, was previously the Chief Engineer for the Tesla Model S.
Back in 2021, when it was first launched as the 2022 MY, the Lucid Air not only made headlines for the performance and luxury it offered, but also the smart engineering behind the vehicle. Its EPA-claimed range of over 500 miles made range anxiety a thing of the past. All this came at a price that was close to $150,000, at least until the more affordable trims joined the lineup.
In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from various manufacturer websites and other authoritative sources, including KBB, iSeeCars, and EPA.

The 2024 Lucid Air Breaches The 500-Mile Range EPA-Rating With The Grand Touring Trim
Courtesy of some enhancements under the skin, the Lucid Air in the Grand Touring trim has become the longest-range EV currently on sale.
A Three-Year-Old Lucid Air Will Cost You Between $67,500-$76,000
Most of the 2022 Lucid Air examples listed on Kelley Blue Book (KBB) have less than 15,000 miles on the clock with prices ranging between $67,500 and $80,000. Given that they are mostly the Grand Touring or the Dream Edition trims, these prices feel like a steal. On the flip side, the first owners are sure to take a strong hit on depreciation.
Depreciation
Luxury cars in general are susceptible to higher depreciation levels. Add an electric powertrain to the mix, and the depreciation goes further up. According to iSeeCars, the 2022 Lucid Air is expected to lose about 67.5-percent of its value in depreciation over a period of five years. For reference, the average range of depreciation for a luxury mid-sized electric car ranges from 52-percent and 73.1-percent.
Charging Costs
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor And Statistics, the average national cost of electricity stands at 17 cents per kWh. The cost can go up to 42 cents per kWh in some states, like California.

In cities like Chicago, charging for your Lucid Air could cost you around $19 for the Grand Touring model, while Dream Edition would require a dollar more. In cities like San Francisco and San Diego, where charging costs are higher, you’d have a shed around $47 to $50, depending on the trim. Given both these battery packs offer excellent range, charging the Lucid Air shouldn’t feel like an expensive affair.
Speaking of charging times, the Lucid Air comes equipped with a 900V+ architecture that supports up to 350 kW of DC fast charging. This allows the electric sedan to gain 300 miles of range with just 20 minutes of charging. Additionally, you can also use your Lucid Air to charge other electric vehicles.
Pros
- Incredible performance
- Luxurious and spacious interior
- Impressive real-world range
Cons
- Unknown long-term reliability
- High depreciation
- Glass roof lets in a lot of sunlight

The range-topping Dream Edition
was offered in two versions; Range and Performance. As their respective names suggest, Range is focused on delivering an EPA-rated maximum range of 520 miles from the 118 kWh battery pack. It is not exactly down on performance, either, with a dual-motor setup delivering 933 horsepower and 1,025 pound-feet of torque. The Performance version goes all out with 1,111 horsepower and 1,025 pound-feet of torque available at the tap of the pedal. 0-60 mph comes in just 2.42 seconds. It still fell behind the
Tesla Model S Plaid
which boasts a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 1.99 seconds.
The Grand Touring, too, is offered with a dual-motor setup with two derivatives, focused on range and performance. Despite getting a slightly smaller 112 kWh battery pack, the range-focused derivative of the Grand Touring manages to deliver an EPA-rated 516 miles on a single charge. This is the performance you can expect from a three-year-old Lucid Air.

The top-spec Sapphire trim has certainly got the performance to back its hefty price tag. The triple-motor setup, two at the rear and one at the front, produces 1,234 horsepower and 1,430 pound-feet, which is a healthy bump over the limited-run Dream Edition model. With the Sapphire, Lucid has also managed to better the Tesla Model S Plaid’s 0-60 mph time of 1.99 seconds.
Interior and Features
The Lucid Air’s focus on luxury is strong from the base Pure trim itself. The interior uses soft-touch and sustainable materials. You get three-zone climate control, heated front seats, and 12-way powered seats, which can be upgraded to an optional four-zone climate control system, and 20-way powered seats with a massage function.
A massive 34-inch cockpit display comes as standard, which handles the infotainment duties, with another display on the central console to operate the air-conditioning. The Lucid Air is equipped with the automaker’s DreamDrive Premium safety features. This also includes the following, and more –
- 3D Surround View Monitoring
- Blind Spot Display
- Front and Rear Cross Traffic Protection
- Automatic Emergency Braking
Interested customers can upgrade to the optional DreamDrive Pro version, which adds Highway assist and future-capable ADAS hardware to the package.

What’s Next From Lucid?
For starters, Lucid will commence the production of its first luxury electric SUV, the Gravity. The SUV is expected to cost around $80,000 onwards. It will offer over 800 horsepower and propel you to 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. Being an SUV, it will boast a towing capacity of 6,500 pounds.
While the exact size of the battery pack is unknown, Gravity will offer up to 440 miles of range on a single charge. The luxury electric SUV will be offered in Pure, Touring, and Grand Touring trims with five, six, and seven-seat configurations. Production of Lucid Gravity is expected to start soon.
Lucid has also confirmed that it will be launching a new high-volume midsized platform. The production of the same is expected to start in 2026. Along with its main manufacturing facility in Casa Grande, Arizona, Lucid also opened one in Saudi Arabia. These will be important models for Lucid which will allow it to take the fight to more affordable electric cars from Tesla, and make full use of its manufacturing facility.
