The Ford Mustang has free rein over today’s muscle car market. With long-time competitors such as the Chevy Camaro and the Dodge Charger and Challenger out of the picture, one might say the Ford Mustang has a monopoly going for it. The product is clearly good, judging by its sales and public acceptance. Ford could simply ride the wave for a few more years without having to invest in its further development. It’s a good thing they didn’t, though.
It seems Ford really has quite a few hardcore gearheads in its ranks still. And these people are responsible for ensuring the blue oval won’t settle for a good product if they can strive for perfection. In comes the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD, the most powerful production Mustang in history.
U.S.-Certified 815 Horsepower
Making use of a supercharged 5.2-liter V8, the Mustang GTD outputs 815 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. This powerful engine also allows the GTD to reach the highest top speed of any production Ford Mustang; a whopping 202 mph. The car also has the aerodynamics and race suspension to go along with its monstrous power. Ford claims the GTD is capable of a sub-seven-minute lap time at the famous Nürburgring.
Taming The Beast
Being the most powerful production Mustang ever, with an incredible power density that results in more horsepower per liter than the likes of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Ford’s muscle car had to undergo a few other upgrades to be able to adequately handle all that power. Aside from the sophisticated aero package, the car also features carbon-ceramic brakes, and semi-active dampers on the rear suspension.

More on the engine, the supercharged 5.2-liter uses a dry-sump oil system that is a first-ever on a Mustang. This system is crucial in keeping the engine lubricated during high g’s while cornering on a circuit. It also allowed for a slightly increased engine speed, which now goes all the way up to 7,650 rpm. The intake and (titanium) exhaust were also revised.
High Speed, Low Drag
Being able to go over 200 mph is no small feat, even for an 800+ horsepower sports car. To that end, the Mustang GTD uses a Drag Reduction System that changes the angle of the car’s rather large, yet tasteful, rear wing, as well as activating the flaps under the front of the car. Ford claims this provides just the right balance to achieve that top speed with ideal airflow and the right amount of downforce to keep enough grip on tap for the driver.
Ford is excited about the 2025 Mustang GTD, eager to deliver on the promised sub-seven-minute Nürburgring lap. For these reasons and more, we feel the fans of the -now niche- muscle car segment also have a lot to be excited about with the arrival of Ford’s extreme performance GTD Mustang.
